Our History & Legacy
The Philippine Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (PWCTU / PWCTUI) is part of a global Christian women’s movement committed to faith, temperance, and social reform.
Global Roots
Establishment in the Philippines
The movement began in the United States in 1874 with the founding of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union in Cleveland, Ohio. It was organized in response to the destructive effects of alcohol on families and communities. Under the leadership of Frances Willard, the WCTU expanded its advocacy beyond temperance to include women’s rights, education, labor reforms, and social purity.
The Philippine Woman’s Christian Temperance Union was organized in the early 20th century during the American period. American Protestant missionaries introduced the temperance movement alongside educational and evangelistic efforts.
The PWCTU was formally organized, aligning itself with Protestant churches and women’s organizations committed to:
Total abstinence from alcohol and harmful substances
Christian family life
Moral and social reform
Protection of women and children
Education and public health advocacy
It became one of the earliest organized Christian women’s reform movements in the country.
Advocacy & Programs
Our Core Mandate: No to S.A.D. (Smoking, Addiction, and Drugs),
Yes to Temperance, Mental Health Awareness and Wellness.
True community transformation begins with protecting the mind, body, and spirit. Today, our faith-driven advocacy comes to life through our modern “No to S.A.D.” campaign—an active, holistic movement dedicated to smoking prevention, addiction recovery, and drug awareness, paired with a deep commitment to mental health and spiritual wellness.
Throughout its history, PWCTUI has worked in these vital areas to champion righteousness, protect vulnerable families, and drive social reform:

Temperance Education
Promoting abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, and later dangerous drugs through: School programs, Community seminars, and Distribution of literature.

Women’s Leadership
Empowering women in church and society, long before broader feminist movements gained traction locally.

Child Welfare
Advocating for the protection of children from abuse, exploitation, and substance exposure.

Public Health and Social Reform
Supporting clean living, moral governance, and community well-being.
